AI is finding bugs faster. Plan for bigger patch days

Microsoft says its own AI system found bugs fixed this month. Vendors everywhere are shipping more fixes. Your update process has to keep up.

This month Microsoft described an internal AI system that found 16 of the vulnerabilities fixed in May’s Patch Tuesday before any human researcher did. Other vendors and researchers report the same trend: AI tools are reading code and finding bugs at a pace nobody had before.

That’s good news in the long run. In the short run it means more patches, more often, from everyone. Monthly totals at Microsoft are on track for a record year.

What that means for a normal IT team:

  • Automate what you can: Windows Update for Business or Intune rings, automatic browser and app updates.
  • Use a small test group that gets updates a few days early, instead of testing everything by hand.
  • Keep a fast lane for edge devices and actively exploited bugs.
  • Measure how many days your machines are behind, not just whether a patch was approved.

Attackers have the same AI tools. The gap between a fix and an exploit is getting shorter.
