Follina: a Word file that runs code, no macros needed

A new Office zero-day abuses the Windows support tool. There’s no patch yet, but there is a workaround.

Over the weekend, researchers found Word documents that run code on Windows without any macros. Microsoft confirmed it yesterday as CVE-2022-30190, nicknamed Follina. The document loads a web page, which calls the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), which runs the attacker’s commands.

Macros disabled? Doesn’t matter. With some file types, just previewing the file in Explorer can be enough.

There’s no patch yet. Microsoft’s workaround is to disable the MSDT URL protocol:

reg export HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ms-msdt ms-msdt-backup.reg
reg delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ms-msdt /f

Run as administrator, or push it through Group Policy or your device management. The troubleshooters still work from Windows settings; only the link-based launch is blocked.

Also:

  • Make sure your antivirus and email filters are updated; most vendors have added detection.
  • Remind staff that a Word file from outside can be dangerous even without “Enable Content”.
  • Install Microsoft’s fix as soon as it ships, then decide whether to restore the setting.
