Which PHP versions still get security fixes?

PHP 8.1 stopped getting security fixes at the end of 2025, and 8.2 follows this December. Check what your servers run.

Each PHP version gets two years of active support and then two years of security fixes only. After that, nothing. Right now:

  • PHP 8.1 and older: no fixes since 31 December 2025.
  • PHP 8.2: security fixes only, ending 31 December 2026.
  • PHP 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5: supported.

Shared hosting and old cPanel servers are full of PHP 7.4 and 8.0, because nobody wants to touch a working site. That’s fine until a serious PHP bug appears and there’s no patch for your version.

  1. Check every site’s version in cPanel’s PHP selector or with php -v.
  2. Test the site on 8.3 or 8.4 in a staging copy. Most WordPress and Laravel sites move with little or no change.
  3. Update plugins and dependencies first. They’re usually what breaks.
  4. Plan the move from 8.2 before December, not after.
