Garmin went dark for days

A ransomware attack took down Garmin’s fitness services, call centres and pilot apps. Customers felt it immediately.

Since last Thursday, Garmin’s services have been down: Garmin Connect for fitness watches, flyGarmin for pilots, call centres and production. Reports point to ransomware. Services are now slowly coming back.

For a consumer brand, an outage is public the minute it starts. Millions of runners couldn’t sync their watches, and they all said so online.

Questions worth asking about your own company:

  • Which customer-facing services depend on your internal network?
  • How will you tell customers what’s happening if your website and email are down?
  • Do critical services, like aviation data, have a separate path?
  • How long would a full restore take? Days is common. Have you tested it?

The technical recovery is half the job. The other half is talking to customers honestly while it happens.
