Zoombombing: lock your meetings

Uninvited guests are crashing video calls, from classes to company meetings. A few settings stop most of it.

Millions of people now meet on Zoom every day, and uninvited guests have started joining public meetings and classes to shout and share offensive content. The FBI issued a warning about it yesterday.

Most of it comes from meeting links posted publicly, or meetings with no password.

Settings that stop most of it:

  • Require a meeting password, and share the link privately, not on social media.
  • Use the waiting room and let people in yourself.
  • Only the host can share the screen.
  • Lock the meeting once everyone has joined.
  • Use a new meeting ID for each meeting, not your personal one.
  • Keep the app updated. Zoom is fixing issues quickly right now.

For confidential meetings, ask what the tool encrypts and where the data goes, whichever tool you use.
